Jackson Rising: Jessica Gordan Nembhard

Jackson Rising

 • Ms. Nembhard is part of a panel at the Jackson Rising conference, where she had the opportunity to discuss her newest book, Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice. African-Americans since the Underground Railroad have used what Ms. Nembhard refers to as "mutual aid societies" in order to earn wages, develop aid for one another, and garner independence from the old slave system. Her book, in tandem with the Jackson Rising conference, highlights the economic strides black culture has taken in the past century.
